Listen to Recordings From Pavement's First Show

Last year, a DJ uploaded a recording of Pavement's second-ever live show, which took place at Maxwell's in Hoboken in 1990. Now, Matador Records' publicity Twitter has pointed out recordings from Pavement's first show ever (as a "real" band). They're taken from a 1989 session at 90.3 KDVS in Davis, California.

They played "Home" and Mellow Jazz Docent", which would eventually appear on their 1991 EP Perfect Sound Forever. Have a listen below, via Consequence of Sound.

And yes, that is, in fact, Stephen Malkmus' high school yearbook photo.

Listen: Jack White and Butthole Surfers' Gibby Haynes Cover New York Thrash Classic

Gibby Haynes : "Paul's Not Home" [ft. Jack White] on SoundCloud.

Jack White's got a Valentine's Day gift for everyone: He's teamed up with Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haynes for a new Third Man Records Blue Series single, a three-song collection out February 14. It's made up of two originals, "You Don't Have to Be Smart" and "Horse Named George", along with a cover of Adrenalin O.D.'s "Paul's Not Home", taken from the 1982 New York Thrash compilation. White produced the track and plays guitar on it.

One hundred copies of the single will be available at the Third Man Rolling Record Store when it stops at SXSW. Those copies will be released on what Third Man's calling "flex-ray" discs, meaning they've been pressed on old medical x-rays. It's also available in a regular version, out February 14.

David Bowie and Morrissey in Fight Over Cover Art

On April 8, Parlophone is set to reissueMorrissey's 1991 record Kill Uncle as well as the 1989 single, "The Last of the Famous International Playboys". However, the single will not feature the new cover artwork that it was intended to feature. (That's the original cover art, above.)

As a statement on the official Morrissey fansite True to You notes, the sleeve was to feature a previously unseen 1992 photo of David Bowie and Morrissey taken by Linder Sterling in New York. But Bowie has demanded that EMI UK not use the photo. The statement reads, "David Bowie has ordered EMI UK not to run the proposed artwork for Morrissey's April 8th issue of the re-mastered 'The Last of the Famous International Playboys' single and CD." It continues, "Although Bowie has no legal rights to the photograph, most of his back catalogue is presently licensed to EMI."

Morrissey is currently ill and taking a break from shows. Bowie, meanwhile, is preparing to release his own record, The Next Day, in March.

Jenny Lewis Sings on Both New Tracks on the Postal Service Give Up Reissue

2013 has been generous to fans of early-'00s heart-on-its-sleeve indie rock. Along with the Postal Service's impending live reunion and 10th anniversary Give Up reissue, Rilo Kiley has just announced their long-awaited archival compilation, rkives.

To promote rkives, frontwoman Jenny Lewis has set up a Twitter account for Rilo Kiley, and in its early hours of existence yesterday, she took some fan questions. One fan asked about the two previously unreleased bonus tracks on the Give Up reissue, "Turn Around" and "A Tattered Line of String". Lewis noted (and a rep confirms) that she sings on both tracks. (She sang backing vocals on the original Give Up.)

The Give Up reissue is out April 9 in the U.S. and April 8 in the UK via Sub Pop.

As mentioned, Lewis is part of the live Postal Service band touring this year. She also has another solo LP in the works.

Phoenix Bought the Recording Console Used for Michael Jackson's Thriller to Make Their New Album

This week's issue of The New Yorker has a nice little nugget of contemporary music trivia: Phoenix's upcoming record Bankrupt! was mixed on the fabled Harrison 4032 solid-state recording console used to make Michael Jackson's legendary Thriller.

According to The New Yorker, Phoenix guitarist Laurent Brancowitz found the console for sale on the eBay page of owner Clayton Rose, who owns a Christian music studio in Fullerton, California. Upon consulting with the band, they decided they "had to have it" because they "liked the idea of working with a consecrated artifact, as well as having something strange upon which to fixate between albums."

"The most mysterious part to me was that no one else-- no nerd or music engineer or memorabilia freak-- seemed to want it," frontman Thomas Mars told TheNew Yorker. "There was something a little spooky about him [Rose]. He was very pushy. It seemed like a scam. " After a prolonged and skeptical online back-and-forth with Rose, Mars committed to the console for a price of $17,000 (the original asking price was $32,000) and shipped it to Paris to begin mixing Bankrupt!.

A couple more tidbits from the piece: The Harrison is as "long as a Ping-Pong table and weighs eleven hundred pounds" and Bankrupt!'s original working title was Alternative Thriller. (This seems to be a trend.)

Twin Shadow Announces Spring Tour, During Which He and His Father Will Share Stories With You

This spring, George Lewis Jr, aka Twin Shadow, will continue touring in support of last year's Confess. Like his previous tours surrounding the record, this trip will have a theme: "True Story." On each date, either Lewis himself or his father will tell the audience a story. "A gem from the depths of my father's life and a stone from the recent corners of mine," Lewis wrote in a statement, "tales retold from lovers and friends."

Lewis has also shared a first story here, "Dirty Charles", chronicling one drunk, ill-fated swim through the Charles River in Boston. As you may recall, it's not the first time he's shared a work of prose

Here's the full explanation behind the "True Story" tour:

You know when someone tells a story and says "crazier things have happened!" Well, you always wish they would just tell you that crazier thing. Like, why would you want to hear a story that's not as good? My father told me great stories my whole life, I often wonder if his stories influenced the way I write music. When talk came up of Twin Shadow hitting the road this year I thought again about how we could make each show special, how each city could have a unique piece of Twin Shadow. I thought about my father's stories, I thought about the stories I tell my friends and I thought this tour would be a good place to share them, so for every city we play my father or myself will tell you one True Story. 24 Cities. 24 Stories. A story for New York, A story for Toronto, A Story for every show on the tour.

After the dates, watch Twin Shadow play "Five Seconds" for Pitchfork.tv's "Mansion Sessions".

Björk Cancels Kickstarter Campaign for Android/Windows Versions of Biophilia App

Björk's Kickstarter has been canceled. The Awl points out (via Spin) that the campaign launched to fund the Android/Windows versions of her Biophilia app is no longer. It's not so much that it fell short of its funding goal; rather, it was cancelled. The project stalled nearly three weeks before its February 27 complete date, reaching £15,370 of its £375,000 goal.

A message to backers explained:

Dear Backers,

We've decided to stop the Kickstarter campaign. Seems like the costs were too gigantic and we too optimistic, so it seemed cleverest to pause it for now. Things seem to be changing fast; perhaps in a year, even months, there will be a far cheaper way to reprogram this. We are extremely grateful for the help we got, though, and want to extend a big thank you to all our contributors, great and small. You guys generously offered your own hard–earned money to something bigger than yourselves that you believe in, and we are deeply touched by your contributions. Once again, thank you. We are still looking at ways of making this happen so send your email address to kickstarter@bjork.com and we‘ll keep you posted when there‘s any new developments.

The Biophilia Team x

Recall that the Biophilia app features a mini-app to go along with each of the album's ten songs, and is being used as part of the Biophilia Educational Program. Björk initially launched the Kickstarter after receiving "lots of international requests for alternate versions of the app, many of which have come from areas with families on low incomes and schools with low budgets."

R.I.P. Jazz Trumpeter Donald Byrd

Influential jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd passed away on Monday due to causes not yet revealed, Amoeba Records reports. He was 80 years old.

According to Amoeba, the news was passed along by Byrd's nephew, Alex Bugnon, who said: "I have no more patience for this unnecessary shroud of secrecy placed over his death by certain members of his immediate family."

Byrd launched his career with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in the 1950s, and he performed alongside giants including John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy, and Herbie Hancock. He was an artist crucial to the roster of the legendary jazz label Blue Note Records, recording on a number of big-ticket albums, including the best-selling Black Byrd. In the 1970s, Byrd worked with a fusion group called the Blackbyrds, releasing hits like "Happy Music" and "Walking in Rhythm".

Byrd's influence was felt long past his peak as a recording trumpeter-- his work has been sampled by hip-hop artists ranging from Public Enemy and Nas to Madlib and the Pharcyde.  J Dilla repurposed Byrd's "Think Twice" for a song on his album Welcome 2 Detroit.

"Let's remember Donald as a one of a kind pioneer of the trumpet, of the many styles of music he took on, of music education," Bugnon wrote in a statement, according to Amoeba. "In sum, Donald was an avid, eternal student of music, until his death. That's what I try to be, everyday!! Rest in peace, uncle!"
