Jenny Lewis Scores Film, New Album in the Works

Former child actress Jenny Lewis has returned to the film world, but not on screen. As Billboard reports, Lewis has scored a film, Very Good Girls, which screened at the Sundance Film Festival. The coming-of-age film is the directorial debut of Lewis' friend, screenwriter Naomi Foner, the mother of actors Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal. It stars Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen, who play a pair of best friends during the summer before college, as The Salt Lake Tribune reports.

Lewis wrote "five or six" original songs for Olsen's character, a songwriter. She told Billboard that "Go Ahead", from Rilo Kiley's 2001 Barsuk debut Take Offs and Landings, served as a starting point. A year in the works, the collection of tracks was recorded with Rilo Kiley's Pierre de Reeder at his studio. The film still needs a distributor, but Lewis said the soundtrack will be released.

Of the songs, Lewis told Billboard, "I allowed myself some silly lyrics and some darker lyrics that I wouldn't necessarily gravitate toward now... I wanted the sound to reflect what you would have heard on my previous records with all my different bands."

Aside from the film, Lewis has also been doing more than Wavves guest spots-- she's got an entire new solo record near completion, which will be out by the end of this year or early 2014.

She also told Billboard, "I have a spring tour I can't talk today about with one of my bands. You'll know soon enough." Maybe it's Rilo Kiley, who are set to release their years-in-the-works archival project sometime soonOr maybe it's the Postal Service? (She toured with them in 2003.)
