SXSW: White Lung

The conditions of last night's White Lung show at the Enabler PR showcase at Holy Mountain were ideal by SXSW standards. It was just after 1 a.m., fellow Vancouver punk act Nü Sensae had just finished in the next room, and the front row was packed. You don't want see White Lung with too much breathing room.

Frontwoman Mish Way is one of punk's most frenetic presences and she led the group rocketspeed through a set of material from last year's excellent Sorry. At various times she threw herself at the ground, curled into a ball, and jumped in place. It seemed exceedingly appropriate to be seeing White Lung just a few hours after I caught a screening of The Punk Singer, the new doc about Kathleen Hanna. Not necessarily because of aesthetic similarities between White Lung and Hanna's groups, but because at this particular White Lung show, I was up front claiming space, surrounded by other girls, and that felt awesome.
