James Murphy is suing one of his fellow DFA Records co-founders, Tim Goldsworthy, for $93,899. Murphy filed the lawsuit with Manhattan Civil Supreme Court last Friday, saying that "attempts to amicably resolve this matter were rebuffed" by Goldsworthy. The suit accuses him of "breach of contract" and "unjust enrichment," reports DNAinfo.com.
Update: The suit is being brought by DFA Records as a whole, not just Murphy.
The lawsuit concerns Goldsworthy's alleged failure to "perform services he was paid for, owing outstanding loans, improperly using the company credit card and making unauthorized withdrawals from its bank accounts," reports DNAinfo. The label also seeks damages and legal fees.
Murphy, the British producer, and Jonathan Galkin founded DFA Records in 2001. Goldsworthy moved from New York back to the U.K. three years ago without informing anyone at the label, according to Galkin. Goldsworthy claimed he moved to raise his family, and still considered himself part of the label. Murphy, Goldsworthy, and Galkin currently own DFA Records.
